Yet, with recent revelations, questions arise: is Stalions’ purchasing of Big Ten game tickets an act of passion or a breach of protocol?
In the digital age, the NCAA’s infractions committee has recognized the changing landscape of college sports. They stated:
"The Board of Directors Infractions Process Committee requested that the Legislative Committee Modernization of the Rules Subcommittee focus its rules modernization efforts on identifying rules that no longer serve the needs of the membership and the 21st century student-athlete, and recommending modifications to or the elimination of such rules. Specifically, livestreams of intercollegiate competition and prerecorded game film are readily available in the digital age. The minimal competitive advantage gained by scouting future opponents in-person is outweighed by the monitoring and enforcement burdens of ensuring compliance with the legislation."
This statement highlights the evolving nature of the game and the available tools. With Michigan’s already sophisticated sign-stealing operation, the added value from Stalions’ efforts is likely minor. But, was it a violation?
Stalions’ actions, made in the name of Michigan’s success, were perhaps naive. Yet, when viewed against the backdrop of NCAA’s acknowledgment of the digital era and the diminishing relevance of certain rules, his actions might find a shade of gray rather than a clear black and white verdict.
A significant detail to note is that the NCAA hasn’t even issued a notice of allegations. If they were to, Michigan would have 90 days to respond. With the College Football National Championship less than three months away, the likelihood of this investigation affecting this season diminishes.
