Was Will Johnson Playing With His Food Against Fresno State?

The one surprising vulnerability on Michigan’s defense during the first three quarters against Fresno State was All-American cornerback Will Johnson. Known for his lockdown coverage, Johnson uncharacteristically allowed several big plays, giving receivers more space than we’re accustomed to seeing from him. On a few occasions, he seemed a step behind, raising some concerns among fans watching the game.

However, as the game wore on, it became clear that Johnson was just playing with his food. After giving up some uncharacteristic plays, Johnson reminded everyone why he’s one of the best in the country. In the fourth quarter, he jumped a wide receiver screen pass, intercepting it and taking it to the house 86 yards for a touchdown. This play was the biggest defensive moment of the game, completely shifting the momentum in Michigan’s favor.

Reflecting on his overall performance, it seems Johnson was deliberately keeping the plays in front of him, allowing some room for big gains but ultimately proving his dominance when it mattered most. He showed up like the All-American cornerback that he is, and this type of game-changing play is exactly what Michigan will need as they head into a tougher matchup against Texas.

One peculiar aspect of Johnson’s game was his absence for two consecutive series in the first half. This decision by the coaching staff was strange, especially given Johnson’s importance to the defense. It appeared that they wanted to get Amir Hall and other cornerbacks involved, which they did. While it’s good to see depth getting reps, it’s unlikely we’ll see Johnson sitting much, if at all, against Texas.

Johnson’s performance in the game serves as a reminder that while he may give up a play here and there, he has the ability to turn the tide in Michigan’s favor in an instant. Expect him to continue to dominate and make critical plays throughout the season.
