When Steve Clinkscale moved on this offseason, there were many questions about the future of the secondary position group at Michigan. Enter LaMar Morgan. Stepping into the role of Defensive Pass Game Coordinator/Defensive Backs coach, Morgan has quickly shown he is the perfect guy for the job, making an immediate and profound impact on the program.
Already, Morgan has hit the recruiting trail with a vengeance, securing commitments from the top two ranked recruits in Michigan’s 2025 class, both in the secondary. Cornerback Ivan Taylor from Winter Garden, Florida, and safety Kainoa Winston from Washington, D.C., both top 50 prospects nationally.
LaMar Morgan’s track record speaks for itself. Coming from the University of Louisiana, where he spent two successful seasons as defensive coordinator and secondary coach, Morgan has a history of transforming defenses. Under his leadership, the Ragin’ Cajun secondary reached double-digit interceptions in every season he was on staff, ranking third nationally in 2020. His ability to elevate the performance of defensive units is well-documented, and it’s clear he’s bringing that same magic to Ann Arbor.

One of the most exciting aspects of Morgan’s arrival is his opportunity to coach Will Johnson, who is currently considered by many to be the best cornerback in all of college football. With Morgan’s guidance, Johnson’s development will be fascinating to watch. The sky truly is the limit for this dynamic duo.
Morgan’s coaching philosophy, encapsulated by his slogan “be the best at getting better,” resonates with both players and fans. It’s a mindset that encourages continuous improvement and excellence. Morgan’s swagger, complemented by his signature bow tie, brings a unique flair to the Michigan sideline. This combination of style and substance is clearly working, as Morgan is not just winning on the recruiting trail but also making an immediate impact on the current team.
In just a short time, LaMar Morgan has proven to be a home run hire by head coach Sherrone Moore. His influence is already being felt, and his potential to elevate Michigan’s secondary to new heights is immense. As he continues to build and develop this group, it’s clear that the future of Michigan football’s defense is in very capable hands.
