On Saturday, September 2nd, 2023, the No. 2-ranked Michigan Wolverines faced off against the East Carolina Pirates in a Week 1 matchup at the Big House. The Wolverines, staying true to their ranking, managed a controlled 30-3 victory in this early-season contest.
Quarterback J.J. McCarthy showcased consistency, completing 26 of his 30 passes, totaling 280 yards. A particular highlight of the game was his partnership with Roman Wilson, which resulted in three touchdowns. Wilson, donning Michigan’s renowned No. 1 jersey, managed to catch six passes, accumulating 78 receiving yards.
Cornelius Johnson made his presence felt with five catches for 71 yards. Additionally, contributions from tight end Colston Loveland and running back Donovan Edwards, each with four catches, kept the Wolverines moving forward.

On the running front, Blake Corum clocked in with 10 carries and 73 yards, finding the end zone once. Donovan Edwards contributed 37 yards from his 12 carries, rounding off a stable offensive display.
The Wolverines’ defense showcased its mettle with Mike Sainristill making a notable interception in the first quarter. The Nebraska transfer linebacker Ernest Hausmann, a valuable addition to the squad, tallied six tackles throughout the game.
