Powering the Ground Game: Michigan’s Running Back Depth Chart Projection for 2023

Donovan Edwards, Michigan running back.

The Michigan football faithful just learned the unfortunate news that running back Isaiah Gash underwent career-ending knee surgery. Our hearts go out to the young man that gave us a huge boost at just the right time in 2022 season. The shake-up in the running backs room gives us an opportunity to take a closer look at the potential depth chart for the 2023 season.

The forthcoming season promises an offensive line that is likely to be the best in the country. With back-to-back Joe Moore Awards under their belt and boasting the return of top talent like Zak Zinter and Trevor Keegan, along with significant transfers like Ladarius Henderson and Drake Nugent, it’s no surprise the team’s recent motto has been “Run the damn ball.” Let’s dive into my individual projection for our running back depth chart for the 2023 season.

1. Blake Corum

There’s no ambiguity here. Blake Corum was on track to be a Heisman contender until he sustained a knee injury during the Illinois game last season. Should he maintain his health throughout the upcoming season, we could very well see him invited to the Heisman ceremony in New York.

2. Donovan Edwards

As Corum’s health will likely be a priority for the coaching staff, Edwards stands out as the reliable candidate for additional carries. Edwards disclosed that he played most of last season with a knee injury and underwent patella surgery in the offseason. Health permitting, the combination of Edwards and Corum could form the best RB duo in the country.

3. Kalel Mullings

Mullings has earned the trust of the coaching staff, particularly in short yardage situations. He even had the opportunity to throw the ball during a pivotal moment last season. Expect Mullings to consistently find the end zone in short yardage situations, even if he doesn’t accumulate a significant amount of yardage.

4. CJ Stokes

Following an impressive spring game performance by freshman Benjamin Hall, sophomore CJ Stokes has been somewhat overshadowed. Despite fumble issues last year leading to a slowed pace from RB coach Mike Hart, I predict Stokes to outperform expectations. With a schedule that might present numerous blowout games, Stokes could become the go-to back in the second half of these contests..

5. Cole Cabana

“But where is Benjamin Hall?” you might ask. Hold that thought. Cabana earns the 5th spot on my list, mostly due to his anticipated role on special teams. With AJ Henning’s transfer to Northwestern, Cabana may step up to fill his shoes.

6. Benjamin Hall

Benjamin Hall, freshman RB for Michigan

Currently, no one in the program is receiving more buzz than Benjamin Hall. His talent is exciting, yet I anticipate a redshirt year for him or Cole Cabana. Given Cabana’s special teams role, Hall seems the more likely candidate. But don’t misunderstand, I believe Hall will be a key RB for Michigan, even if we must wait a year to see his impact in big games.

7. Tavierre Dunlap

We’ve seen glimpses of brilliance from Dunlap, but considering the talent ahead of him, don’t expect him to make frequent appearances this season.

8. Leon Franklin

Rounding out my list is grad student Leon Franklin. While he saw some action in the spring game, I foresee his game time mostly limited to late-game clean-up minutes.
